Campaigns Manager or Director

 
 

Overview: 

Black Visions’ role of Campaigns Director will lead the development of Black Visions’ power building campaigns and strategies. By managing a team of organizers and strategists, this role will help to develop healthy movement ecosystems and innovative strategies to ensure Black Visions is leading campaigns capable of winning transformative change. The Campaigns Director will be key to our strategic planning process by directly managing and implementing Black Visions long term campaign and organizing strategies. 

This role will work inside of a team and in direct coordination with other “Pods” (aka departments)  and their leadership staff, supporting cohesiveness to our work overall.  This role will represent Black Visions externally with partners, community members, and stakeholders.

Note: This role is being listed as either a Manager or Director. Exact responsibilities, compensation, and title will be determined by experience of hire. If hired as a Director, the expectation will be that you are able to take on and lead key responsibilities with minimal coaching due to a breadth of previous experience.

ABOUT BLACK VISIONS

Since 2017, Black Visions, has been putting into practice the lessons learned from organizations before us, as well, our direct experience in building within the Movement for Black Lives, in order to shape a political home for Black people across Minnesota.Through our intentional growth process, we aim to center our work in healing and transformative justice principles, sustainability, and developing Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns. By building movements from the ground up with an integrated model, we are creating the conditions for long term success and transformation.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Campaigns and Organizing Strategy 

  • Lead and manage overall strategy alongside Co-Executive Directors 

  • Work with other managers, directors and lead campaigns staff to develop overall organizing strategy that meets organizational membership, leadership development, and power-building goals

  • Manage a campaigns and organizing plan ensuring staff are able to implement strategic and meaningful interventions for community engagement including tactics of: base building, events, direct action, volunteer canvasses, and trainings 

  • Coach campaign organizers to further develop and implement their organizing programs in areas of safety including ending policing and environmental justice 

  • Directly lead or support on key campaigns and organizing projects

  • Build meaningful relationships with our membership, partners, and community members

Pod Management and Leadership

  • Manage organizing staff; lead organizing and campaigns pod including developing and monitoring budget, work plans, program activities, facilitating team meetings, and hiring new staff

  • Support sustainability and wellness of team through coaching, team meetings, and projects that support staff morale and development 

  • Train to serve as a spokesperson to communicate the vision and work of Black Visions 

  • Support resource development activities as needed including: supporting on grants, reporting, and funder relationships 

Movement Ecosystem Building 

  • Deepen relationships with Black partner organizations and other critical partners; support or lead on projects that seek to strengthen a Black organizing ecosystem in Minneapolis in particular, and Minnesota overall 

  • Build and sustain relationships with numerous organizational partners connected to Black Visions campaigns and organizing 

  • Develop relationships and coordinate organizing strategies with local, statewide, and national partners

  • Plug into and participate in national movement leadership positions and tables as is relevant and in alignment with pod workplan and organizational goals annually

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years experience leading power building campaigns and coalitions

    • Including a clear understanding of base building and how to teach others how to organize 

    • Experience managing coalitions and networks 

    • Understanding power and how it is built

  • 3+ as an Campaigns/Organizing trainer and facilitator

  • Supporting multiple staff in the role of manager/direct supervisor

  • Working knowledge of local politics and relationships with local BIPOC leaders

  • Management of a program or organizational budget 

  • Experience living, organizing, and working within Black communities 

  • Steadfast commitment to collective liberation and ability to speak and unite those behind Black Vision’s mission and vision

  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills; experience using Microsoft Suite, basic internet based technology and data entry/management 

  • Common sense, flexibility, and teamwork skills with the ability to exercise independent judgment

  • Time and project management skills; ability to pivot to meet current events and organizational needs while maintaining attention to detail

  • Working in collective or cooperative settings

  • Positive and open personality

  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience managing multiple deadlines, and maintaining attention to detail

Must be willing and able to:

  • Communicate needs and boundaries as they arise

  • Delegate tasks to focus on their primary role

  • Speak in front of small and large groups (translation provided as necessary)

  • Speak to what Abolition is and why it is essential to Black liberation

  • Access to reliable transportation 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

VACCINATION TRANSPARENCY

Due to in person interactions during employment, candidates will be required to show proof of being fully vaccinated (Two Doses of either Moderna or Pfizer Vaccines or One Dose of J&J as well as all appropriate booster doses) against COVID-19 before commencing employment. Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage. Flexibility to work outside normal business hours that include evenings and weekends and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

*Due to COVID-19, Black Visions staff are currently working from home with a few moments (about 1x/month) when staff are expected in person. 

REPORTS TO & LOCATION

  • This position reports directly to the Black Visions Co-Executive Director 

  • Position is located in Minneapolis, MN. All Black Visions staff must have a home address in Minnesota.

This is a full-time, salaried position. Salary will be set commensurate with experience and will include a full package of benefits including health and dental insurance, matching retirement, investment in personal development, and an expansive time off policy. 

Salary range: $75,000 - $90,000 pending experience
