Membership Programming Organizer
Overview:
Black Visions role of Membership Programming Organizer will lead the development of Black Vision’s membership by designing and implementing systems, activities, and community engagement that connects interested members to Black Visions and deepens members capacity to lead.
By managing data, maintaining relationships with members, and regular communication, this role will create systems for members to be deeply engaged and invested in Black Visions programs and campaigns.
This role will be managed by the Lead Membership Organizer and work in collaboration to evolve Black Visions membership absorption and retention process. Through regular, direct outreach, this role will develop and build a list of potential members and supporters.

Since 2017, Black Visions has been putting into practice the lessons learned from organizations before us, as well, our direct experience in building within the Movement for Black Lives, in order to shape a political home for Black people across Minnesota. Through our intentional growth process, we aim to center our work in healing and transformative justice principles, sustainability, and developing Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns. By building movements from the ground up with an integrated model, we are creating the conditions for long term success and transformation.

Core Responsibilities:
Membership Development
Leading membership engagement programming that deepens engagement, shared decision making, and leadership capacities
Coordinating strategic planning crews and development of member-led committees and crews, and supporting the implementation of regular membership programming & initiatives
Supporting and utilizing systems for membership tracking and retention including ensuring across team proper collecting, entering, and management of base and member data
Cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships with active and members through 1-1 conversations, direct engagement, and intentional follow up
Track and engage membership who are not consistently present to determine needs and capacity to engage meaningfully in the organization
Leading the coordination of regular membership meetings, and events with support of co-membership organizer and lead organizer; bottomline logistics lead for member events
Co-leads coordination and planning of annual membership retreat and end of year celebration with support from membership pod
Working alongside communications staff to communicate with members and potential members via database/email, social media, and direct phone calls
Leadership Development
Develop a system for tracking leadership development of current members. Work with all pods to develop, identify, and track leadership development activities for members including conferences, projects, and trainings
Directly coach and support membership to develop skills and capacity to create via member led initiatives and projects within the organization such as hosting trainings, program planning, and facilitation
Supporting members to connect and build with each other
Leading coordination of trainings and political education focused on how to be an effective Black Visions member
Key support to Membership Organizer on coordinating and implementing membership orientation sessions
Intentional outreach to members to access and utilize the leadership development fund based on their expressed areas of passion and growth
Plugging members into prioritized movement trainings such as Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity (BOLD), Momentum, and Allied Media Conference
Membership Care & Support
Leading the care and support of members during and after moments of crisis and rapid response through membership care plan and other necessary initiatives with support from membership pod
Tending to the care and support of members during Individual moments of crisis, challenge, and need when necessary
Leading the creation and curation of materials for members during key moments, including annual Membership Retreat and End of Year Celebration
Actively communicating membership care needs to Lead Membership Organizer for intentional support and follow up
Membership Joy & Connection
Support the coordination of members leading art + cultural projects connected to Black Visions broader campaigns and programs
Co-lead Membership End of Year Celebration planning and coordination with Lead Membership Organizer with support from co-membership organizer
Cultivating consistent and varied membership spaces and events that center joy, creativity, and relationships for members to connect and build with one another outside of organizing work
Other duties as assigned*
* As a young and growing organization, we know we must be flexible and adaptive to change; this requires a willingness to hold that these specific responsibilities may shift and work may be required on evenings and weekends. This may also look like “All hands on Deck” moments around key programmatic activities and campaigns.
Experience and Qualifications
Applicant must have the following experience:
2+ years experience leading/supporting community engagement efforts
Organizing in Black communities, especially Black LGBTQ communities
Building and maintaining intentional relationships
Supporting the leadership of volunteers/members in implementing projects
Experience using Microsoft and google suite, basic internet based technology and data entry/management
Steadfast commitment to collective liberation and ability to speak and unite those behind Black Vision’s mission and vision
Developing and implementing a yearly calendar of events
Facilitating and training groups of more than 10 people effectively to a shared goal
Using and supporting database management
Leading logistics and program event coordination
Willingness to learn in fast paced environment; flexibility to work in teams and independently
Facilitating autonomous member projects
Growing intergenerational leadership
Outgoing, positive, and open personality
Applicant must be willing and/or able learn to:
Canvassing and doorknocking (access is essential to BLVC and we will work to create work plan that promotes safety and sustainability)
Speaking in small and large groups
Collaborative program development
Receive delegated tasks and complete them in a timely manner
Communicate when tasks cannot be completed as agreed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage. Flexibility to work outside normal business hours that include evenings and weekends and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
*Due to COVID-19, Black Visions staff are currently working from home with a few moments (about 1x/month) when staff are expected in person.
REPORTS TO & LOCATION
This position reports directly to the Lead Membership Organizer
Position is located in Minneapolis, MN. All Black Visions staff must have a home address in Minnesota.
This is a full-time, salaried position. Salary will be set commensurate with experience and will include a full and generous package of benefits including health and dental insurance, matching retirement, investment in personal development, and an expansive time off policy.
C2/O2 Position - Salary range: $50,000 - $55,000 commensurate with experience
