Yes 4 Minneapolis

The Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign is a Black-led, coalition-model campaign that seeks to replace the Minneapolis Police Department with a new department of public safety by amending the Minneapolis City Charter.

Following the murder of George Floyd last summer, we witnessed the the young Black, brown, and indigenous people spark a global uprising against state sanctioned violence right here in Minneapolis.  Our community demanded our city leaders move away from violent policing to create a new department that addresses community safety holistically and with a public health approach. People power pushed our City Council to unanimously support an amendment to do just that. Then, an unelected body of bureaucrats and their pro-police allies blocked us from the ballot.

The Minneapolis city charter currently requires the City to maintain a police department with a minimum level of sworn officers on staff. Our charter campaign will propose amending the charter to remove these requirements, and introduce a new department of public safety with a fully integrated system that would incorporate licensed peace officers with all the other tools and functions that one would associate with public safety and public health. Building the infrastructure necessary to vision and build a new model of safety.

The Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign, will be mobilizing voters to change our city’s charter, eliminating the requirement for a police department and establishing a new Department of Public Safety. Black Visions is one of the key coalition members of this campaign because we believe this is the first step in our collective vision for a police-free future. This is a key step in developing the infrastructure at a city level to begin investing in new strategies for community safety.
